Auschwitz Crematorium

Inside the Auschwitz Crematorium

It seems that the Nazis perfected the art of mass killing. It was almost like an assembly line where people would be processed for extermination. To make way for more prisoners, people would needed to be disposed of. The gas chamber proved to be a very efficient way to kill people with not much effort. It only takes 20 minutes until everyone is dead. So what happens after that? There was a group of prisoners specifically chosen for a grim task, that is to collect the bodies of the dead. These people are called sonderkommandos. The people have a slightly better standard of living compared to the rest of the inmates. This was so that they would be able to perform their duties properly.

Bodies of the dead would be brought to the crematorium which effectively turns the bodies into ash. However, the sonderkommandos know too many secrets and they were regularly killed. The sonderkommandos managed to stage a revolt in Auschwitz but the uprising was quickly suppressed and everyone was killed. Eventually they were also fed to the crematorium which they used. Today, visitors can visit the crematorium which was used back in the day. There was a surviving one where visitors can imagine what happened. The building was not that big and it was separated from the the rest of the barracks. There was a large chimney coming out of the crematorium. I dread to breathe in the air when a disposal is ongoing. That is probably something that happens all the time.
