Outside the Barracks of the Auschwitz

Restricted Area in the Auschwitz

Restricted Area in the Auschwitz

The prisoners at the Auschwitz were given only the most basic of facilities for them to survive. We saw the poor facilities which were given the prisoners and one cannot but feel bad about this. I cannot imagine how this place is in the winter. I doubt that the Nazis would bother providing heating here. Then again, dead prisoners won’t be able to do any work, so it might be possible. I can only think that the barracks here are the only shelter which the prisoners can get. Outside of the barracks is a totally different matter.

Guard Towers at the Auschwitz

There are open areas outside the barracks. Every day, there will be a head count to ensure that everyone is accounted for. Even if the person is really sick, they need to be present for the roll call. Missing people will cause misery for the people who are present. This ensures that people would be compliant and not cause trouble. The headcount is always done even in the winter. If there are missing people, everyone will have to wait in the freezing cold. There nothing outside the barracks. There are electric fences surrounding the compound so escape will not be easy. Guard towers are erected nearby so they can keep an eye on the prisoners.
