Church of Saints Philip and James in Sękowa

Sękowa is another village in southern Poland. Its main claim to fame is the presence of the Church of Saints Philip and James which part of the UNESCO World Heritage site listed under the Wooden Churches of Southern Lesser Poland. The church is just off the main highway and there is a large carpark here for visitors. The main church itself is a walk from the car park and it may not be easy to spot from the car park. That is probably one of the things which characterize these churches, they tend not to stand out since they seem to blend in with nature. However a look at the church of Saints Philip and James and one can immediately see that this church is rather special.

The church is just like the other churches where it sports a gothic architecture. However, this one is probably the most unique I have visited so far. One major features of theese wooden churches are their rather prominent roofs. However, the Church of Saints Philip and James seem to take this idea to whole new level. The church is almost all roof when viewed from the outside. The tall roof goes all the way down to the height of a person. There are parts where the roof even goes lower than that, making visitors stoop down. I don’t know what the logic is for this design but I think it is very unique. There are no visible windows here so I expected it to be dark.
