Sandomierska Tower at Wawel Castle

The Wawel Castle Complex is certainly a very interesting place. Large parts of the castle are already open to visitors so even if you didn’t plan on paying for the entrance fee to the castle, you can already have a good look at the castle at least from the outside. The castle complex is a wonderful mix of architectures and I think it is nice to see how organic the growth of the castle was over the years. The castle is located at one of the highest points in the area and it has a great view of everything but it seems that not everything was that well planned.

The southern part of the castle has little in the way of defense and it is vulnerable to attack. To solve this, the they built a tower to be used for defense. It is quite impressive to see the highest point of the area still build a tower. This is so that attackers won’t be able to easily reach the tower. The Sandomierska Tower rises on the southern side of the castle. In later years, it has been used as a prison, it is called a more glamorous prison for nobles, as opposed to the dungeon for common criminals. I believe the tower is open to visitors but there is a bit of climbing to do.
