Room with a Murder Hole at Blarney Castle

I was surprised to see so many people queued up to kiss the Blarney Stone. Then again, this is one of Ireland’s most famous attractions. Kissing a stone isn’t really my kinda thing but it seems to be why you come here in the first place. I’m glad that there were a lot of safety measures taken to ensure visitors safety, but you can still see some people panicking because of the perceived danger of suspending yourself upside down from that height. I don’t really see any way one would possibly fall from there but you’ll never know. There is a man who makes sure you won’t fall, so make sure you give him a tip. Half of your body will be on stable ground anyway, so there was very little risk, or they would have made people sign a waiver to do the activity.

After the stone itself, there wasn’t much to see. You get a better view of the light well which illuminates the castle these days. This gives visitors and idea that they are actually quite high up. There were a few more rooms to see. Probably one of the more interesting ones was one which has a “murder hole”. This is basically a grill on the floor which happens to be right above the entrance just after someone comes in. If you have unwanted visitors you can drop boiling oil on them, hence the name murder hole. This was a rather morbid way end my tour of the castle, but they do have to take measures in case they overcome the castle’s defenses.
