When my guide started down the mountain, I was thinking, “That was it?” We went all the way to the Wandu Mountain City and all I get to see is a pile of rocks? My guide probably had the same idea as we were making our way to the car. I realized that we were walking past the car now? It seems like there was still more to see here. Just across the parking lot, was a large field in total contrast to the mountainous area we just went to. I was the surprised to see several mounds in the horizon.

It seems that I don’t just get to see a pile of rocks but I get to see several piles of rocks. These were also tombs from the Korguryo kingdom. My guide was showing me around the field and pointing out subtle differences in the tombs. As it turns out, the make of the tomb shows the social status of the deceased. Some of the tombs were made of earth, while others were made of rocks. Others were made of a combination of these materials. Some may be earth tombs but have stone inner chambers. It was fascinating to see such sophistication in burial customs all laid out just like that.
