Lai Chi Rehabilitation Center 励志更生中心

Gantry at the Lai Chi Rehabilitation Center

My friend picked a rather interesting spot to start our hiking. There was a checkpoint where it was obvious visitors were not welcome. It was the Lai Chi Rehabilitation Center 励志更生中心. This is a correctional facility built on the side of a mountain, in what is practically in the middle of nowhere. Other than the gantry and the guard house, there isn’t really much to see here, not did I want to linger too longer there lest we get to see the correctional up close, really close.

As I mentioned, we got off the bus a little too early and we were continuing on our way to the Shek O Country Park. It was a little strange to be walking on the highway but there was little space to walk in. After all, they probably didn’t expect people to be walking along this route. The slopes of the mountain are all covered in cement. This is to prevent landslides. Much of the slopes of Hong Kong are cemented, giving them the appearance of artificial mountains.
