Hangzhou seems to be a common final resting ground for well known historical figures. Not surprising, since the view is really great here and it could be well worth retiring here. As I was strolling around the banks of the West Lake, I came upon another tomb. Like most traditional Chinese tombs, this tomb was also just a simple mound. There was a large stele in front of it saying the name of the one buried there. This was the tomb of Wu Song.
Now, this is a bit strange. Wu Song is a character from the Chinese classic Water Margin 水浒传. He featured in numerous stories in ancient China, one thing in common is how he is always depicted as a hero with great strength. Later on in life, he was said to have become a monk and retired in Hangzhou. In the 1930s a tomb was built for him and later restored in 2004. Wow, now even fictional characters have their own tomb. I guess this is a way for the people show their respect for their millennia old culture.
