The Old Town Square of Prague is certainly a site to behold. I have been to a few impressive squares in Europe but this one has got to be one of the most impressive ones. There were several beautiful buildings which surround the square. In fact, the most impressive one is not even on the square itself but you can still see the very distinctive Church of Our Lady before Týn rise above the square. There was a bit of rain that evening so I wasn’t really feeling it when it comes to photography. We were going to be there for a couple of days, hopefully, I will be able get a drier night.

While the old town square has several beautiful buildings around it, it also has some monuments within the square itself. One of the more prominent ones is the Jan Hus Memorial. It is a rather large sculpture of the martyrdom of Jan Hus. So who is this Jan Hus. He is considered to be one of the forerunners of the reformation movement in Europe. He was critical of the behavior as well as the policies of the Catholic Church. Over time, Jan Hus became a symbol of this resistance against the rule of the Vatican. Jan Hus was executed by the Catholic Church for leading this movement. This triggered the Hussite Wars which were between the Catholic Church and the followers of Jan Hus. After five hundred years, Jan Hus’ Martyrdom is immortalized here in the old town square of Prague.
