Verona Arena at the Piazza Bra

I finally made it to the old city center of Verona. I was surprised how far it was from the outer city gate to the inner city gate. It only goes to show you how long Verona has been continuously inhabited. I would imagine that the inner city walls enclose what was the original city of Verona but over the centuries, the city grew beyond its city walls and thus it required new city walls further away from the original center. While the inner walls are a little more difficult to see these days, the gates and, of course, the original city center are still here.

Piazza Bra in Verona is the first piazza that I encountered going in the city from Porta Nuova. It is a massive piazza that has several important structures surrounding it. I don’t think there is any use hiding it, the most prominent structure by far here in the Piazza is the Verona Arena, a Roman amphitheater that looks very wonderfully preserved. There are also other important looking structures around the piazza but more on that later. The piazza is also host to a vibrant temporary market – no doubt because it was December. This early in the morning the piazza is already quite busy, I’m sure it will be even busier as the day goes by.
