Like a lot of medieval cities of its time, Verona also had city walls for its defense. I was making my way to the city of Verona and I was coming from the railway station on foot when I first came across the city gates. Technically, the Porta Nuova is not the actual city gate, but rather this is the inner one of the outer gates of the city. The official gates are further inside. I guess they already planned on Verona getting bigger that they have outer walls planned out. The Porta Nuova was built in the middle of the sixteenth century. After far as city gates are concerned, the Porta Nuova is relatively recent since the original inner city gates were built in the first century.

It shows how much the city of Verona has grown over the centuries because it has inner and outer city walls. Parts of the walls have been torn down to make way for roads going in the city. However, the main Porta Nuova was kept intact and can still be seen today. I wasn’t sure if it is possible to go in the gate but I was still able to get close to the gate. The gate is built between two towers or bastions which are defensive in purpose. The towers are circular to facilitate visibility. Of course the the gate was meant to control access to the city.
