The Basilica of the Saint Anthony of Padua may not look very impressive from the outside, and even when I stepped inside the church, I didn’t think it was that impressive at all. I have seen quite a lot of impressive churches in Europe but this one in the city of Padova didn’t give me a strong impression. That is, it didn’t give me a strong impression at first. The more I go in and look at the church, the more treasures I seem to uncover. The beautifully decorated Chapel of Saint James was woefully unlit which led me to think that it wasn’t important. Only after a closer look that I saw the beautiful frescoes which were painted by the Italian painter Altichiero de Zevio.

I was exploring the basilica in a counter clockwise direction. I was avoiding the center since there seemed to be a service happening soon. Off to one side of the basilica are more interesting features of the church including a clock. I was hoping that it would be an astronomical clock similar to other churches that I have visited but this one was “just” a standard clock. A clock isn’t very common to see inside a church and the one which is made here has a very classic style. I couldn’t tell if the clock still works but I won’t be surprised if it still did.
