Frescoes at the Chapel of Saint James in the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua
Frescoes at the Chapel of Saint James in the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua

The Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua is one of the major landmarks in the city of Padova or Padua. This is most especially so because who is probably their most well known resident, Saint Anthony of Padua who was based here for a period of time. The basilica is a place of pilgrimage because this is also where the remains of the saint lie. For now, I am going around the basilica just appreciating the interiors of the church. One of the places which caught my eye was the Saint James Chapel. I know I said it caught my eye but it actually was not as prominent as one might think it was.

The chapel is to the right of the church and it occupies quite a significant portion of that side of the church. Curiously, there weren’t any light here and it didn’t seem very inviting. I was relying on ambient light to see what was here. Once my eye adjusted, I can see that there are frescoes here. These are frescoes painting by Altichiero de Zevio an Italian painter who I have never heard of but it seems that he is quite significant. The frescoes were made in the 1370s and they depict scenes from the crucifixion and also the life of Saint James. It was a shame that there wasn’t much light there since it seemed rather significant.
