It was early morning and I head to the town of Cividale del Friuli in Northern Italy. It was at an awkward location that it was this town that basically told me to rent a car to get here. It was close to the Slovenian border but so far everything still seems to be Italian. I parked the car somewhere near the town center and started walking. There was a big pedestrian area here which basically told me that this is where I should be going. My first stop was the Ponte del Diavolo. When I was doing my research on Cividale del Friuli, one place kept popping up and it was the Ponte del Diavolo. The name means Devil’s Bridge, the origins of the name will be apparent later.

The Ponte del Diavolo soars over the river which flows beside the town. In the photos, the river will be a beautiful shade of blue, not unlike those you would see in glacial lakes. This should not come as a surprise since the Italian Alps are not too far away. The snow melt from the mountains will form rivers and they eventually make it here. The photos online were very attractive which made me decide to come here, however, these photos need to be taken at the proper time. Winter isn’t the proper time for that. Because of the steep cliffs around the bridge and the fact that the sun is very low in the sky, not a lot of direct sunlight makes it all the way down to the river below. In the summer, the sun will shine through and illuminate the water revealing the beautiful colors of the river. So for me, even though the it was actually sunny, the sun was too low in the sky to make a difference. I ended up with these high contrast scenes that were difficult to take.
