It might surprise you to know that Aquileia was once a very important city in the Roman empire, however it is nothing like that now but its importance is now being an incredible archeological site. Perhaps even more surprising is that the much of the artifacts in Aquieia still need to be dug up. There are places where this has already happened. In fact, there have been excavations done underneath the basilica which still stands. It is thus not a surprise to know that there will be other sites as rich as the one below the basilica. One of these places is the Domus and Episcopal Palace, which is not that far from the basilica.

The Domus and Episcopal Palace is where the bishop resides. Like a lot of places like these, not much of the structure remains, except for the floor. For some reason, the floor here in Aquileia are much more durable compared to the rest of the building. While there are obviously signs of wear and tear on these beautiful floor mosaics, it still far better than what befell the rest of the building. I think what is most impressive here is not that there are even more mosaic here, but it is the fact that there is more than on level of them. The site is cut such that visitors can see down through multiple levels of the structure. You can see that Aquileia has been in existence long enough that they have started building on top of each other.
