This is the first time I was visiting Avondale Forest Park and I didn’t really know what to expect. I can only deduce from the name that there is a significant forest here but I wonder what is there to set it apart from the other forest parks. It seems that there is a bit of history here. Samuel Hayes inherited this land and realized that forests were disappearing. He came up with the idea of planting more trees in his land which he named Avondale. He even built his house here, which visitors can now visit. We will have to see if we can visit that house but with kids, I doubt we would be able to.
The estate was then passed to the Parnell family who eventually gave birth to Charles Parnell. His ownership of the Avondale Forest Park would later shape his thought in his later political life. Charles Parnell would later be known as a great statesman and even have places named after him – Parnell Square and Parnell Street are all named after him. These days, the forest park is state owned and it is open to the public for a fee. I like how they built elevated walkways which rises high above the forest floor. This is optional since it is still possible to just walk below but of course, but walking on the tree top walk would give you a more scenic, level and easier way to enjoy the visit.
