I was pleasantly surprised by my visit to the Palazzo Maffei Museum. What I was expecting to be a rather mundane visit to the museum ended with a magnificent view of the Piazza delle Erbe. I guess, I shouldn’t take museum visits for granted anymore. I continued on with my visit to the city of Verona. The trouble with Verona, is that it kept its heritage structures so well that it was difficult to pick which ones to visit. Ideally, one would need to spend a few days here and not speed run the visit in one day. I had to pick a few important places and be happy with them. My next stop is the Basilica di Santa Anastasia.

As you can see, this is the city’s largest and most important church. It was built as a symbol of the strength of the Scaligers, the ruling family of Verona and the Dominicans. They worked together to produce imposing structures that shows their power. This church was actually built over a previous church which was dedicated to Saint Anastasia. The new church was build in honor of Saint Peter of Verona. However, the name never stuck and it has always been referred to as the church of Saint Anastasia. The basilica serves as a model for other churches during its time. And you would probably notice that the churches would be looking very similar to each other.
