Balcony at the Casa di Giulietta in Verona
Balcony at the Casa di Giulietta in Verona

The Casa di Giulietta is one of the most visited places in the city of Verona. I followed a sign which led me to where all the tourists were. It wasn’t an overwhelming number of visitors but I think this was because it was winter. I would expect that there would be vastly more visitors in the summer. The Casa di Giulietta is the supposed home of Juliet from Romeo and Juliet. I think it is quite fun that there is a “real” house associated with the character that most people who come to Verona would inevitably find themselves here.

The house was constructed in the fourteenth century. It doesn’t look that remarkable since Verona is known for its remarkable preservation of various heritage structures that having a house which is remarkably preserved shouldn’t that big of a deal. The house is on one side of small courtyard just away from the main road. What is probably the main feature of the house is the remarkable balcony. To romantics, one could imagine that Romeo would be at the courtyard while Juliet would be up on the balcony doing whatever it is they do. The balcony literally sticks out that it doesn’t look like it belongs to the house. Indeed the balcony is a twentieth century addition to the house and it is actually on made from ruins that were sitting in a museum. Knowing all this, it really makes you think if this place is worth a visit, but I visited the house so you don’t have to. If you ask me, just take photos from the outside and you should be good.
