I quickly finished my visit to the Church of San Fermo in Verona since I know that there were still other places I need to see. I can imagine this to be an issue since Verona has been here for almost two centuries, and they kept their heritage structures mostly intact across the centuries, there will be a lot of these places to see here. Sometimes, these places would just “blend in” since they have always been here. I am sure that Verona would have a lot of these places. One of these places is the Porta Leoni.

Porta Leoni is a rather inconspicuous gate which allows entry into the old city center. It was so inconspicuous that I almost missed it, if it weren’t for a massive hole in the middle of the road. The said hole is actually an excavation. There were old Roman roads which were found not that far below the modern road and they were exposed here for visitors to see. I know this is an issue with Rome where seemingly everywhere they dig, they would come up with something important and ultimately they won’t be able to do whatever infrastructure project they needed to do because the old structure needs to be preserved for eternity. I can understand how hard this can be, but a lot of the times preservation usually wins out.
Porta Leoni is a small gate right next to the hole. It isn’t really much to look at and it is in fact quite small compared to the Porta Nuova. It has its origins in the first century BC. The current structure is a result of patching up over the centuries and it is amazing that it is still standing. Visitors can have a closer look at the Porta Leoni from a small path.
