The Church of San Fermo MAggiore is a old church in the city of Verona. It sits along the banks of the Adige rather inconspicuously. Unlike other churches in Italy, this church isn’t incredibly large. It isn’t even a cathedral however, it is one dedicated to the supposedly local Saints Firmus and Rusticus. The church was built in the twelfth century but continuously enhanced over the years. This is probably a microcosm of why Verona is a UNESCO World Heritage site in the first place. The church was carefully maintained and expanded to what it is today.

The interiors of the church look much older which belies its age. There are also frescoes on the walls which were a popular way of decorating the insides of churches at the time. I have seen this type of designs in this trip to Italy and I am not surprised to see it here. Unfortunately, these types of frescoes are extremely fragile and some of them have deteriorated over the centuries. There are still some which can still be appreciated by visitors while it is still there. In particular, I was paying more attention to the frescoes one some pillars which appears to be very old. There are paintings here but I think they are more recent compared to the frescoes.
