Inside the Arena di Verona
Inside the Arena di Verona

By the time I got to the Arena di Verona, there were already a lot of people in the ancient Roman amphitheater. However, this doesn’t mean that it was crowded inside the amphitheater. Visitors have access to almost the entire amphitheater and the amphitheater is huge. And since there is no single place in the arena which is the “main” site, people were just spread all over the place. I was at the top of the amphitheater doing my best to take photos of the rest of the area. I walk halfway around the arena before I started to make my way down.

From the ground level of the arena, which is the performance area, you can get a feel of just how large the place actually is. The arena has a capacity of 22,000 people. That’s a lot even by modern standards. I think only modern football stadiums surpass those in capacity. For a place that large, I wonder how spectators can even see what is going on. Even from the top of the arena, I was already having difficulty seeing the people at the ground level. I don’t think they have huge screens to show everyone what is happening. That might something possible now, but not two thousand years ago. Either way, the Arena di Verona is a marvel of Roman engineering prowess. It is another glimpse into how sophisticated the ancient Romans were.
