I was walking from the Verona Railway Station to the city of Verona. It was some distance away but I was early so I didn’t mind the extra walking. When I arrived at the Porta Nuova, which is one of the gates to the city. I noticed that it wasn’t as busy as I expected. It turned out that the Porta Nuova is just the outer city wall. These walls were built fifteen centuries after the original city walls were built in the first century AD. To my mind, the Porta Nuova was already very old since it was built almost five hundred years ago. To think that this was actually a newer gate that was built long after the original walls were built. It truly boggles the mind.

The new city walls were built in recognition of the growth of the city. As you can see, the city has been occupied for a few millennia. When they built the outer walls, they decided to build a long road from the inner gate to the outer gate. Today, that road still exists as Corso Porta Nuova. The wide road is lined with various establishments but for me, what stood out was that it gives a picture perfect view of the city of Verona. From the outside, I can see the inner city gate. There are also snow capped mountains behind the city which perfectly frames the photo. I needed to play frogger with the traffic since there is a safe spot to take the photo.
