The Cappella degli Scrovegni or Scrovegni Chapel in Padova is undoubtedly the most important site in the city. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing under the name Fourteenth century fresco cycles of Padua. There are four locations which are included in the listing but I think the chapel here is the most impressive one. Because of the rain that afternoon, specifically the time I was to visit, there weren’t a lot of visitors waiting to get in the chapel. Entry into the chapel is controlled, and visitors can only enter in batches. This to ensure that the temperature and humidity inside the chapel as well as the waiting area is controlled. This is to make sure that the conditions in the chapel don’t change and thus encourage the growth of mold or similar things.

The chapel itself isn’t very large. However, it makes up for it in the sheer magnificence of the frescoes which adorn its walls. The frescoes were made by Giotto and his team. Almost all the walls and ceiling were covered in frescoes. The church itself was better lit and it was easier to see the frescoes. The walls have their stories to tell while the ceiling itself is blue like the sky. I spent most of the time just admiring the frescoes. You can’t exactly walk right up to the walls since there are seats in the way. But the place it small enough that it doesn’t matter.
