I went to the Palazzo della Ragione not only because it is one of the most important structures in the city of Padova, but also because it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Entering the medieval town hall was a like entering a time machine. In contrast to the busy outdoor market right at the piazza outside, there was a sudden peace and quiet to be had here. As you might expect, there were far less people here in the hall than the outside. There also happened to be an exhibit by Yoko Ono at the time of my visit.

However, the star of the show here are the frescoes which adorn the four wide walls of the medieval town hall. It was strange to see fresco cycles here since I normally expect to see them in old churches but it seems they also put them in civilian buildings. Don’t ask me what the frescoes represent since a lot of the are civilian in nature. There would be more abstract representations like the zodiac or the sun. I would see some which are might be religious themed but I wasn’t sure. It is amazing to see an entire hall covered in these frescoes. The more studious among you can spend several hours going through each of the panels – there are over two hundred of them. What’s more is that they are in excellent condition.
