The city of Padova has several sites which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. I plan to visit all of them today and I was already on the second one. The Oratorio di San Michele Arcangelo or Oratory of Saint Michael the Archangel is a small oratory on a rather uninteresting road. The oratory was actually built towards the end of the fourteen century by the Lombards. Again, a common theme for this trip was the Lombards whose work I have been seeing since the start of the trip. The oratory is the latest example of their work. I had to wait some time for the oratory to open since they don’t open early in the morning.

I paid the entrance fee and I had the entire oratory to myself. The oratory is small and practically empty. However, what is important here are what are on the walls. As I have seen in other places during this trip. The Lombards are masters of making frescoes and the Oratory of Saint Michael of the Archangel is one of their better examples. This one was good enough to get them on the UNESCO World Heritage site listing under Padua’s Fourteenth Century Fresco Cycles. As you can see there are frescoes painted on the walls of the oratory. Like the other places, some parts of the frescoes have peeled off and are empty. However, there are still significant parts that are still intact and very much worth a visit.
