Some Alpenglow on the Dolomites
Some Alpenglow on the Dolomites

I managed to find a good spot to photograph the Val di Funes. I am sure that there are other places like this in the Dolomites but this was the one that showed up in my searches and that is what I was going with. For such a beautiful place there weren’t too many visitors here and it seemed that I would keep seeing the same group of people around town. I made my way to a viewing area on a hillside which looks at the town. By this time, the sun was already starting to go down. One of the nice things about traveling in the winter is that I can quickly get sunset and night shots without having to wait a long time for it. Since the days are shorter in the winter, night time comes sooner.

I was lucky that the skies are clear and that the sun was going down. At this point, only the highest points of the mountains would still have light while the rest would be in shadow. This phenomenon is called Alpenglow. I know I didn’t get a very good alpenglow, but it is clearly there. I think it also depends on the location as well as time of the year that the sunset occurs. If the sun sets in the wrong direction, then you don’t get a nice alpenglow. This is another one of those things which you either need to have a lot of patience for or just plain lucky. I still got a glimpse of it but I know it can be much better.
