I came to Salzwelten Hallstatt because it is an important part of the history of Hallstatt and even in this part of Austria. On the way here, I knew it was already cold, I knew that there was recent snowfall, some of which still hasn’t cleared even in Salzburg. Here in a mountainous area of Austria, there was definitely more snow. The Salzwelten Hallstatt is on top of the mountain which is right behind the village of Hallstatt and even from the village below, I can see that the top will have quite a bit of snow. Still nothing prepared me for the amount of white stuff here. This is a scenery I am not used to and of course the inner child in me was very happy to see it. The sky was exceptionally clear, which made for great photos. The sun was only starting to rise above the nearby mountains and starting to illuminate the snow here.

I wasn’t alone in enjoying the snow here. This early in the morning, there were already people up here just playing in the snow. Although Salzwelten Hallstatt isn’t good enough for winter sports, there are nearby areas which do. Maybe in a different lifetime, I would want to try that. For now, I was just trying to make my way to the Salzwelten itself. There are signs which point to the place. I was surprised that visitors still needed to walk that far to get there. Thinking about it, it would be a shame now to enjoy the beautiful scenery if people were directly deposited at the salt mine and not see the surrounding area.
