The Topkapi Palace Museum was constructed as a palace after the fall of Constantinople. It was built near the famous Hagia Sophia. The location was chosen no doubt because of its proximity to the monument. As far as palaces go, this one didn’t seem that massive. I have seen other palaces in Europe which are much larger. This one seems to be a little more modest. Modesty, however, is relative. There are still several buildings here within the palace grounds which are worth visiting. What I noticed is that the buildings aren’t very awe inspiring. They were at most three stories tall and the designs weren’t anything to write home about.

I was quite surprised to see how modest the palace actually was. Apart from the number of buildings here, you probably won’t think that this is a palace until you go in. The old palace has been converted into a museum and it is a rich showcase of the treasures of the Ottoman empire. The museum is actually well made. There were different sections for different types of artifacts such as porcelain. There were displays of a large number of plates which had Islamic designs on them. This is not unique to Turkiye though but it is still good to see them especially within the context of the glory of the Ottoman Empire.
