Gazebo at Mathildenhöhe

I didn’t have much planned for my visit to Mathildenhöhe. I understand this is an artists’ colony and it was recently named as a UNESCO World Heritage site for the unique architecture here. The idea of an artist colony is also quite unique. Perhaps it is to give the artists a quiet place to work on their art. It also gives them a place for similar minded artists to work and perhaps collaborate on work. The art here in the artists’ colony isn’t limited to architecture, there are also the traditional arts like paintings and sculpture but the main exhibition hall here in Mathildenhöhe was closed for renovation. This was disappointing for me since I have been quite unlucky with some sites being closed mostly for the winter.

I would like to think that I have seen most of the important parts of the park so I was just walking around. I planned to spend most of the day here in Darmstadt so I was just taking my time here. I was also waiting for the wedding to finish so I can visit the wedding tower nearby. Along the way I was just appreciating the unique architecture here. One of the structures I saw was a small gazebo. I know gazebos aren’t the most interesting thing but the style of this one was one that I haven’t seen before. This is more modern in appearance but what probably stands out the most are designs on the columns. I can’t tell what they are supposed to be but it looks different and yet interesting.
