I was disappointed to see that the exhibition hall of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony was under renovation. Maybe they took this chance to renovate the place because there would be less visitors in winter. That doesn’t matter to me since it is not open anyway. I decided to look elsewhere in the artists colony for other things to see. Immediately, I saw a church in the middle of the colony. This wasn’t any ordinary church but it is a Russian Orthodox Church. As you may know, Russian Orthodox churches look very different from the churches that most would be familiar with.

This particular church is significant because it was used by the last tsar of Russia, Nicholas II. The tsar’s wife was from Darmstadt and they would come to Darmstadt frequently to visit family. The chapel looks like a typical Russian Orthodox church. The signature golden onion domes of the church tell you that it was used by royalty. As far as churches are concerned, this is a bit small, it is a chapel after all. I find the architectural style very attractive, probably because I don’t see it that much. I have seen some of these types in Poland and it just oozes with charm.
