Walking on the Eiserner Steg in Frankfurt

One of the interesting features of the city is that it is along the River Main. I never knew about this river and I was fully expecting that the river I would see here is the Rhine, but this one is just a tributary of the Rhine and is narrower. There are several bridges which cross the Main River but the one closest to me is the Eiserner Steg or Iron Footbridge. As the name implies, the bridge is made of iron and it looks very sturdy. I was surprised to know that the bridge dates from 1869. Not too far away from this bridge is the Old Bridge which is even older.

The Eiserner Steg while relatively recent as far as these bridges go, it actually a reconstruction because of the damage it sustained in the second world war, it was recently rebuilt in 1993. The bridge itself isn’t that impressive but its age is. The still didn’t deter couples from attaching love locks to whatever place they can find. I don’t know there why it needs to be a bridge. I read news of how France needed to close down one of their old bridge to get rid of the love locks that have accumulated over the years. There was a danger of collapse because it became very heavy. The Eiserner Steg isn’t there yet and hopefully it would stay that way for a long time.
