Medieval Buildings at Römerberg

Medieval Buildings at Römerberg

I managed to find one of Frankfurt’s most important landmarks. Römerberg is a medieval town square that is surrounded by various medieval style buildings. Most of these buildings are reconstructed from the damage from the war but I think they did a very good job are restoring the square. It is certainly very attractive. At lot of the buildings here are half timbered and because they look pretty much the same, but with different colors, it makes it even more attractive. It is hard to imagine how it was back then but as you can see from the buildings, it used to be very dense in here as this was considered the heart of the old town.

Over the years, these buildings became run down and soon were only occupied by low income people. This all changed when there was a restoration and eventually became noted for its beauty. At one point, Frankfurt was considered to be Germany’s most beautiful city because of Römerberg. The square used to be the sites of imperial coronations but these days it is used by events and now by a busy Christmas market. I will probably be back here a few times to see how it would be at night. It might look even better then.
