Inside the Church of Lorsch Abbey

The Church at the Lorsch Abbey is one of the two remaining structures here are the old abbey grounds. As you might expect, there used to be way more structures here than what can be seen now. Lorsch Abbey used to enjoy a lot of favors from the Pope as well as the emperor, so much that it was raised to be an imperial abbey with independence only answerable to the emperor. However, wars over the years have razed much of Lorsch to the ground and this also includes majority of the abbey. The gatehouse did manage to keep much of its original structure intact but not much of anything else.

The church here is a restoration of the old church that used to be here. However, it is only a literal shell of its former self. The church is just the building and nothing much can be seen inside. I was hoping that there would at least be some interiors that can be seen here but there is nothing of the sort. Like other places I have been to here in Germany, the restoration only stops with the structure while the interiors may or may not be restored back to how it was. In the case of Lorsch Abbey, they didn’t bother restoring the interiors so visitors would have been left imagining how it used to look.
