Inside Konstantinbasilika

Inside the Konstantinbasilika

The Konstantinbasilika is one of several ancient Roman monuments that are in the city of Trier. The Konstantinbasilika or the Aura Palatina or the Basilica of Constantine is a church building from the era of emperor Constantine. Trier being an imperial city has to have a large church. I think this is also especially significant since Constantine adopted Christianity as the official religion of the empire. The structure is very imposing and almost too good to be considered ancient. It has been rebuilt over the centuries which will explain its durability. So how does a basilica like this look like from the inside?

Actually, not much. I was quite surprised to see how bare the basilica actually is inside. I understand that this is still an active, now, Protestant church but apart from the shape of the building, there were not a lot of things that would tell you that this is a church. Of course, it being still active, would have at least an altar in front and pews for the congregation to sit in and of course the organ above the entrance. However, apart from that, the walls are bare. There are no statues or elaborate sculptures that would be common in churches as old as this one. Instead, what you see is bare brick walls. This was done after the last reconstruction because of the damage from the war. It was thought that it would be better to just leave the brick walls visible. So we end up with what we see now.
