The Roman Amphitheater is a relatively common feature in ancient Roman cities. Obviously, back then, there was no television and movie houses but they had amphitheaters. This is where all sorts of entertainment of the people are held. The event can be varied from poetry, plays or even sports events like gladiatorial combat. A lot of these events can have modern equivalents, or at least slightly less violent equivalents. The city of Trier is an imperial city because the son of Constantine frequently stays there. so it is not a surprise to see structures like this built here.

The city of Trier also has it’s own amphitheater. It is considered to be the tenth largest one still intact. There is an entrance fee to get in to see the amphitheater. I was hoping to get a look at the amphitheater from afar since it is that big but the amphitheater was carved out of a hill and the sides are too high for anyone to just have a peak at it. I went in the amphitheater through the front entrance and I imagined how a gladiator would have felt going through the gate. I was surprised to see that the sides of the amphitheater are all grass where the seats should have been. I don’t know if this was how it was really designed but I imagined there to be actual seats for the spectators as opposed just merely sitting on the grass.
