Sunrise Along the Rhine

Sunrise at Sankt Goar

Sunrise at Sankt Goar

It was already past nine in the morning but the sun has yet to fully rise here in Sankt Goar. I know that that is already past sunrise but because of the local topography of Sankt Goar, you won’t see the sun until way past sunrise. The town of Sankt Goar is set on the banks of the Rhine. The Rhine has carved a valley and has created a a magnificent scenery of river, gorge and valleys. The town itself is on the river valley and there are mountains behind it. These block the sun for a while until it has risen high enough. This means that they get even less sun than they should even in winter.

Walking Along the River Rhine

Walking Along the River Rhine

From the looks of it, it is going to be a clear but frigid day. It is not exactly the best time to be sightseeing. However, despite this, I think it is a very attractive place to live in. I don’t know much about grocery in here but maybe people have to buy in bulk to make sure they have enough. Looking at the river, I can see that there are several barges that pass through here. The River Rhine is obviously a major transportation artery for cargo. It is also an important area for tourism as it is not only cargo ships that pass through here but also tourist ferries. These are very long ones similar to the ones that I saw in Köln. If I had time, I think that would have been a very nice activity considering the beauty of the area.
