Inside the Aachen City Hall

Inside the Main Hall of the Aachen City Hall

I think this is the first time that I have been to a gothic structure that isn’t a church. From the outside of the Aachen City Hall, it is the rear of the building which looks like a gothic church. The facade of the building it a more traditional type of castle but there are still the pointy towers. One of the main points to see here is the hall. It seems that this is where feasts are done whenever there is a coronation. If you recall, Aachen is an imperial capital of the Carolingian dynasty starting with Charlemagne. So coronations here would be a huge event.

The hall while it is large enough, seemed to be rather uninspiring. There are the arches which are typical of gothic churches. There are also paintings on walls which would fill in an empty space formed by an arch. I don’t know what scenes are portrayed in the painting. I can only guess that it is something historical and significant. At this point, I was already wondering if this was it. For such an imposing structure this can’t be all that it has to offer. After all, I paid money to get in here and take photos.
