Ponta da Piedade is one of the most visited places when in Lagos. It is a strip of land which sticks out to the ocean and it is surrounded by amazing cliffs. The unique thing about the cliffs is the color of the rock which is pale yellow. This is a far cry for the dark colors which I have seen in Ireland. What’s more the rocks have been carved by the ocean into interesting shapes and I think it is very unique. It is no wonder that it is one of the most famous places in Portugal. While Ponta da Piedade is just one place, the area is actually rather large and there are multiple places people can visit while here.

Most people would be finding their way to the road which leads to the Ponta da Piedade, this is also where the car park is. I ended up parking by the side of the road like a lot of the others. From here on, everyone goes on foot. If one walks all the way down the road, they would run into one of the historical landmarks in the area – Farol da Ponta da Piedade Lagos. This is a lighthouse which was built in 1913. It makes sense to build a lighthouse here since the area is quite high up and it is easily visible from the sea. Despite being a lighthouse, the actual structure itself isn’t very tall. I guess since it was already on high ground there was no point to build it any taller. Unfortunately, the lighthouse is off limits to visitors. I don’t think it would have been able to handle the volume of visitors that area here anyway.
