Obelisk at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas

One of the more memorable casino hotels at the Las Vegas Strip is the Luxor Hotel and Casino. As you know, there are several of the resorts here at the Strip and each of them tries to out do the other. A lot of times, the hotel casinos would adopt a theme for their hotel to make them different from the others. Caesar’s Palace went with ancient Rome. Paris Las Vegas obviously went with France. Venetian went with Venice. Towards the end of the Las Vegas Strip the Luxor Hotel and Casino adopted theme of ancient Egypt.

A few things come to mind when talking about ancient Egypt. However, more often than not, the pyramids are probably at the top of the list. Indeed, the hotel at Luxor is shaped like a pyramid encased in glass. It is actually an amazing sight to see here. After passing through shops from Mandalay Bay Hotel, I ended up at the Luxor Hotel. I was surprised at how hollow the building was. Much of the structure is supported by the four massive pillars and the hotel rooms are actually along the walls of the pyramid. This leaves the interior of the pyramid available for various things. I thought it was a massive waste of space not to use it but I am also glad that they chose this design. Residents of the hotel would have a clear view of the inside of the pyramid and it won’t be blocked by walls. Additionally, since there are no vertical shafts, the elevators actually travel diagonally. That would be an interesting to experience.
