Going to Glen Canyon Dam

Glen Canyon Bridge

Glen Canyon Bridge

I started earlier in the day so I can see more of the town of Page which apparently has quite a few places to see. Unsurprisingly, a lot of these places are related to the nearby Colorado River. The first place I visited was the Horseshoe Bend which is a meander of the Colorado River. It is one of the signature points at Page in Arizona. Much of Page’s existence is ultimately due to the Colorado River so I would be going around following the river to see other places which the river created.

Glen Canyon Dam

Glen Canyon Dam

The previous day on my way out of town, I noticed that there was a dam here. I know I should have known this beforehand but I only noticed it when I drove past it. I knew I had something to visit when I would spend the whole day here in Page. Glen Canyon is the name of the canyon where Page is. Even before the construction of the Hoover Dam, there were proposals to build a dam in this area. There was a lot of controversy from the proposal and eventually its construction. Dams have a huge environmental impact far beyond the actual site. It changes the ecology of the place which gets filled with water. It also changes the ecology of downstream which would now receive far less water than before. If the river is long, then the impact would be far reaching.
