The Grand Canyon Visitor Center is a welcome respite from the stifling heat outside. Although it is not fully air-conditioned, it is much cooler than the outside. There are several exhibits here at the visitor center including one which tells how the Grand Canyon was first explored. This was the time before the dams were built which makes the trek very dangerous. One of the more impressive exhibits here is an audiovisual show at one end of the visitor center. I initially went there to shelter from the heat but it turns out that there is a show which is played repeatedly.

At the center of the auditorium is a sphere where the show is projected. The show is about the history how the Grand Canyon was formed and it made sense that the screen would be a sphere. It showed how the continents moved over the millennia. Over the years, various types of rock were laid over what is to be the Colorado Plateau. When the continents moved, the rocks were pushed up. The Colorado River would then carve out the present canyon over millions of years. You can just imagine how powerful the Colorado River is to be able to carve a canyon that is over a kilometer deep. By carving out the rock, the ancient layers of rock are exposed and now being appreciated by tourists from all over the world.
