Long Wharf

Marina at Long Wharf

Marina at Long Wharf

I ended up at a very lively part of Boston. As you know Boston is a seaside city so it has access to a lot of the sea. Back then, Boston would have been one of the the very first ports of call of migrants seeking a new life in the New World. As a result, Boston would have needed very good maritime infrastructure even back then. The result would be to build a pier or wharf in the case of Boston to support all these ships that are coming to the city. One of the most prominent wharves that were built, is Long Wharf.

As the name implies, Long Wharf was meant to be long. However, when I was at Long Wharf, I didn’t think it was that long at all. I was thinking that maybe at that time the wharf was considered long. However, it seems that I was mistaken. Long Wharf was indeed long. However, it is not that they shortened the wharf but rather the land behind the wharf was filled in. Back then Long Wharf extended much further in the city, thus making Long Wharf accessible to large ships because it reaches out to deeper water. Over the years, the land behind Long Wharf was reclaimed until Long Wharf was no longer long. I was a strange situation where the land crept towards the sea and not the other way around. Either way, Long Wharf is home to a marina and there is a walkway around the wharf. I think it makes for a very nice place to go for a walk. Amusingly, there is a floating platform that was built for ducks. It is actually used by the ducks too.
