The Cathedral of Notre Dame de Chartres is truly and impressive piece of architecture. It is a massive church which dominates the town of Chartres. It is a romanesque and gothic blend of a cathedral and it is as impressive as the others I have seen in this trip. It is actually a very old church having been built in the 12th century. Over the years, it has been a destination for the faithful. This time, it is a destination for tourists like me. This wasn’t the first cathedral on this site though, nor is it the second one. There were at least five cathedrals here. Somehow they have a strong tendency to burn down to the ground. On the flip side, each time, a new cathedral would be built in its place.

The Chartres Cathedral has a typical cathedral layout. I don’t know why this is the case but maybe everybody was just imitating everybody else when it comes to building churches. You could forgive me for glossing over some details since a lot of these magnificent structures but after a while they tend to look a like. This is especially true here in France since most of these churches are romanesque or gothic. The styles all have very similar features so even if you switch one for another, it would be difficult for the untrained eye to know the difference.
