Inside the Cathedral of the Notre Dame de Reims

The Cathedral of Notre Dame de Reims is certainly a very imposing structure. The famous French cathedrals tend to be very tall. This cathedral is no different. What’s more it is a significant cathedral because this is where the kings of France were crowned. If there is a place you wanted to be crowned, this would be one of the best places. Plus you get to forge close ties with the church to ensure that you have better control over your subjects. If you have the church’s ear then you can be assured of cooperation from them. The cathedral is described to be high gothic. That is, a gothic church with the traditionally romanesque rose window called the oculus. This is a common architecture in some of France’s largest churches as I would later find out.

It is actually difficult to appreciate the beauty of the cathedral since you are so far below while the church itself is so tall. Apart from the main portal, it was difficult to see what else is there because it is just too far. I decided to enter the gates and see for myself how impressive this cathedral is. Unsurprisingly, the church interiors are dark. This is typical of gothic churches. However, I understand changes have been made because of feedback that the inside might be too dark. Like a lot of gothic churches, the pillars rise up high and support the ceiling just like a very tall tree supporting the sky. This is an intentional design as it would convey a sense of majesty and size to any visitor who comes here. I noticed that there weren’t as many people inside the cathedral compared to the outside. I guess, they are happier finding snacks at the Christmas Market.
