Exploring Mizen Head

Propeller from the Steamship Irada at Mizen Head

Let me start by saying that I was disappointed with my visit to Mizen Head. I was hoping that this would be one of the highlights of this trip. I have heard of Mizen Head for a while now and for the longest time, it was always too far to visit. But now that I am here, there was hardly anything to see because of the fog. For history buffs, there is a massive propeller that is on display here. It is from the steamship Irada, which sank just off the coast of Mizen Head. This was in 1908 where they encountered rough weather and she sank. The propeller was recovered in 1995 and it is now on display here.

There is also an old light of some sort here but I am not sure what is actually is. There was no sign describing what it is. There is a visitor center here but it seems to be closed, probably because of the pandemic. I understand that there is also a bridge which you can cross. However, visitors are not allowed to go further from the parking lot. This is just adding more insult to injury. Not only can I not see the view from Mizen Head but I also can’t cross the bridge. I guess, even if they did allow visitors through, I won’t be able to see anything anyway.
