Cliffs at Baltimore

The trail to the Baltimore Beacon brings you to the top of a hill which overlooks the entrance to Baltimore Harbor. This is probably the best spot to build the Baltimore Beacon since it is so open and yet high enough for it to be seen. Additionally, you get to see quite a lot of the area around Baltimore and further away. Immediately, right in front of you, you can see Sherkin Island, which is one of the outlying islands here in the area. There is also Cape Clear, also another island that is visible from the beacon.

What is immediately clear is that the landscape of the area is very wild. There are numerous steep cliffs here. I can’t see that much but this spot also happens to have its share of cliffs. Even the nearby headland to the south looks to be quite steep as well. Additionally, Sherkin Island itself seems to have a lot of steep cliffs. I understand that you can take a ferry to Sherkin Island, so the view approaching the island must be quite amazing to see the cliffs up close. These features are a product of millions of years of natural processes. You can even see how the layers of exposed rock have warped and are now almost vertical. These features are typical of the Cork coast. This is exactly why I decided to come here.
