Closer Look at the Baltimore Beacon

One of the strangest landmarks here in the village of Baltimore is undoubtedly the Baltimore Beacon. As a result of the Irish Rebellion, the British started building lighthouses and beacon as an early warning system. This was one of them. Unlike any lighthouse I have even seen, this one is like one solid structure. There are no doors here and it is conical. It is painted white so it is also called Lot’s wife after the biblical character that got turned into a pillar of salt. The beacon stands on top of steep cliffs and guards the entrance to Baltimore Harbor.

The Baltimore Beacon is indeed a strange structure. There are no doors, so there is very little practical utility for it other than a marker for navigation. There is a small sphere on top of the cone and again, it seems to be just decorative in nature. Being painted white makes the beacon easily visible but is it useless in the dark. It doesn’t seem to be illuminated at night either. Still it is a unique and beloved structure here in the village. There are a lot of people who come to visit the beacon. Parking is very limited so either drive here very early, of just walk as it is only thirty minutes away from the village.
