Full Parking at Timoleague Abbey

I was following the West Cork Coastal Route. I only found out about it when I was leaving Kilbrittain where my bed and breakfast is. As the name implies, the route would primarily follow the coast. I’m hoping that this is like a Cork version of the Wild Atlantic Way. It did take me along the coast where there is beautiful coastal scenery. I noticed that these areas are very sandy or I think it is silt. I gives the area a different character different times of the day depending on the height of the tide. Timoleague is the first major village that I come across the West Cork Coastal Route.

Walking Around Timoleague Abbey

Walking Around Timoleague Abbey

Although I arrived early enough, I can see that parking is already a problem here. I had to go around the abbey area to find a place to park. From here, it is time to walk. I can see that the area is also heavily silted much like in Kilbrittain. This seems to be a common feature in this part of Cork. There was a sign which said that Cork was affected by the Great Quake of Lisbon that the waters around Cork became heavily silted. I don’t know how true this is because Lisbon is quite far away and to think that an earthquake there would permanently alter the geological features of Cork seems to be quite amazing to me.
