Maghera Beach

Going to Maghera Beach

Going to Maghera Beach

On a previous visit to Maghera village, I found out that there is a large beach here. What’s more, there seem to be caves here but I was there at a bad time since the tide has already come in so most of the caves weren’t accessible. I decided to come back here and hopefully I remember to come when the tide is low. There is a parking area on the way to the beach but you need to pay for it. Some people would end up parking further out to avoid paying for it. I still made use of the parking area anyway but the caretaker wasn’t there yet. There is a path from the parking to the beach and some parts can be a bit rough so make sure you have the proper footwear for this.

The beach was much further than I thought. I hit sand immediately but there was no water to be seen. I had to walk quite a bit to catch a glimpse of water which is in the distance. Looks like the Maghera Beach is one large deposit of sand. There are a number of places in Donegal which are like this and Maghera Beach seems to be largest one I have seen. The sand here seems to be permanent especially the taller sand dunes. You can tell because they already have grass growing on top of them. Okay, but what about the water? When the tide is low, the water can be quite far away from here. Although you can see some streams forming as the tide is coming in, the actual sea is much further out.
