Can You See Dun Fort

I was visiting the Portnoo area of Donegal on my way to explore the western part of the county. I realized that I haven’t been to this part of the county that much so I wanted to see more of it. Portnoo has a large beach here which makes it a great place for holiday makers. However, in this time of pandemic, there are no indoor activities even restaurants. The golf course is open if that is your thing. For me, the reason why I wanted to visit this area is because of a place called Dun Fort. The fort isn’t at the beach area, for that I have to drive pass Portnoo village and following the signs to what appeared to be in the middle of nowhere. There road here is narrow and parts of it can only accommodate only a single car so be aware of walkers and cars coming the other way.

I kept looking for the path to the fort but I couldn’t find it. In the end, I had to ask a local who pointed me to it. I wasn’t very far but the problem is the owners of the land closed off the access to the fort because of the pandemic. After all, you don’t want to risk catching the virus because of some stranger just passing through your land. While I totally understand their reason, it is disappointing not to be able to see it after coming all the way here. That is technically not true. It is possible to see the fort without trespassing and without the use of drones. The road actually provides a look at the fort. Unfortunately, it is very far and I had to use my long lens to get closer to see it. Dun Fort is a curiosity because it is a very well made circular fort that it built on a small island in the lake. It isn’t exactly known what the purpose of the fort is but it is really worth a visit. Perhaps I could try to invest in one of those drones so that I don’t have to trespass on their property. Better yet, hope that the pandemic ends so we don’t have to do this anymore.
